Interesting news about GM beets in this story. It shows a little of the ebb and flow of biotech crop advances and opposition to them (as well as media coverage of them). In many ways, the development relates to my piece about GM turf grass in Wired last year. Again, the essential trick is making the crop resistant to glyphosate, a.k.a Roundup. Nothing new there. On the other hand, the public response to biotech applications to for golf courses versus foods can be quite different. The discussion will grow more complicated in the coming years, with the advent of crops designed to better handle drought, provide extra nutrition for malnourished populations and sequester CO2.
